We have all been there. You take your favourite wig out of the bag and the back is a knotted mess, the ends are dry as straw, and you are already googling replacements.

Hold on. A tangled wig is often fixable, and it costs a lot less than buying a new one. The trick is to be gentle, patient and a little bit sneaky about it. Pull hard, and you will lose hair. Take your time, and you can often save it.

This guide is for human hair wigs. Synthetic wigs cannot take the same treatment, so check what yours is made of before you start.

Why wigs tangle and mat in the first place

Matting does not happen overnight. It builds up slowly, usually in the places where hair rubs against something. The nape of the neck, under a scarf or collar, and anywhere the hair rests against a pillow are the usual suspects.

A few other things make it worse:

  • Dry hair, because there is nothing to help the strands glide past each other
  • Product build-up that makes strands sticky
  • Brushing roughly, or not brushing at all
  • Sleeping in the wig without protection
  • Storing it loose in a bag or drawer where it gets crushed and tangled

Knowing the cause matters, because if you fix the tangles but keep the habit, they come right back.

First, decide whether it can be saved

Take a good look before you start. Some wigs are an easy rescue and some need a professional.

  • Probably fixable at home: tangles at the nape or ends, dull and dry hair, light matting, a wig that just feels rough
  • Better with a professional: heavy shedding in clumps, a thinning hairline, torn lace, missing knots, or mats that go all the way to the roots

If you are unsure, go through the steps below gently and stop the moment you feel heavy resistance.

How to detangle a matted human hair wig, step by step

  1. Do not dry-comb the mat. Forcing a comb through a knot is how hair gets ripped out, and the knots in the lace go with it.
  2. Soak the hair in lukewarm water with conditioner. Fill a basin and work a generous amount of conditioner or detangling spray into the tangled areas. Let it sit for about ten minutes so the hair softens.
  3. Loosen with your fingers first. Pick apart the biggest knots slowly, starting at the very tips. Be patient. This step does most of the work.
  4. Use a wide-tooth comb, ends first. Hold the hair above the section you are combing so you are not pulling on the roots, and work upward in small sections.
  5. Rinse and condition. Rinse out the product, then apply conditioner to the lengths and ends, keeping it away from the lace.
  6. Blot, do not wring. Press out the water with a towel and let the wig drip for a few minutes.
  7. Air-dry on a stand. Keep it away from direct sun and heat. Finish with a little leave-in conditioner on the ends once it is dry.
If a knot will not budge, stop and leave it. Coming back later with more conditioner is better than tearing the hair.

Bringing dull, dry hair back to life

Even after the tangles are gone, the hair can look tired. A deep conditioning treatment helps. Apply a moisturising mask to the lengths, leave it on for the time stated on the product, and rinse well.

A small amount of lightweight oil on the ends can add shine. Keep it away from the lace and the roots, because oil near the base can stain the lace and weaken the knots.

Do not overdo it. Too many treatments can leave the hair heavy and limp, so use them when the hair feels dry rather than on a fixed schedule.

How to stop it matting again

  • Detangle gently after each wear, starting at the ends.
  • Use a satin bonnet or satin pillowcase, or take the wig off at night.
  • Put leave-in conditioner on the ends to keep them soft.
  • Avoid scarves, rough collars and anything that rubs the same spot all day.
  • Store the wig on a stand, or in a breathable bag if you have no stand.
  • Wash only when it needs it, because over-washing dries the hair out.

For lace-specific care, our guide on how to care for an HD lace wig covers washing, drying and storing step by step.

Mistakes that make matting worse

  • Combing dry, tangled hair from the roots down
  • Cutting out the knots, which often leaves a gap you cannot hide
  • Using hot tools on damp or dry, damaged hair
  • Piling on heavy products that attract dust
  • Ignoring small tangles until they turn into big mats

When a revamp is the better choice

Sometimes the kindest thing for a wig is a professional refresh. If the hair keeps matting even with good care, the hairline is thinning, the lace is torn, or you simply want the wig to look new again, a revamp can save you the cost of a replacement.

A revamp typically means a deep clean and treatment, detangling, repairing or replacing worn lace, and restyling the wig so it looks fresh. What is included depends on the condition of your wig, so it is best to show it to a stylist.

At our wig studio at Mountain Mall on Thika Road, Nairobi, we do wig washing and treatment, lace replacement and revamping. Have a look at our studio services or contact us and we will tell you what your wig needs.

Quick answers to common questions

Can every matted wig be saved?

No. Light to moderate tangles can usually be rescued. If the hair is matted down to the roots, shedding heavily or the lace is damaged, a professional revamp or a replacement may be the better option.

Can I cut the tangled part off?

You can, but it is a last resort. Cutting leaves a visible gap and shortens the wig unevenly. Try the soak-and-loosen method first.

How often should I deep condition a wig?

There is no fixed rule. Do it when the hair feels dry, rough or hard to detangle, and not more often than the hair needs.

Is it normal for a wig to shed?

A little shedding is normal, especially when you detangle or wash. If you see clumps of hair coming out, or bald patches forming, get the wig checked.

Does this work on synthetic wigs?

Not in the same way. Synthetic fibres react badly to heat and some products, so follow the care instructions for your wig, or ask a stylist.

Final thoughts

A wig that looks beyond help can often be brought back with a basin of lukewarm water, a good conditioner and a lot of patience. Be gentle, work from the ends up, and know when to ask for help.
